Introduction to WindRose
WindRose is a web-based tool for creating windrose diagrams to visualize wind direction and speed distributions. No installation required, just enter your data and generate publication-ready plots.
What is a Windrose Diagram?
A windrose diagram (also called a wind rose or polar wind plot) shows the distribution of wind directions and speeds at a location. The diagram displays:
- 8 compass directions (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW)
- Wind speed bins shown as colored segments
- Frequency or magnitude represented by segment size
Quick Start
- Enter your data in the table (one row per direction)
- Configure bins for wind speed ranges
- Visualize your windrose diagram
- Download as PNG or SVG (premium)
Key Features
- Interactive data table with undo/redo
- CSV import for bulk data entry
- Customizable speed bins (uniform or custom ranges)
- Free PNG downloads (2 per week)
- Premium SVG exports with unlimited downloads
Data Structure
WindRose uses a simple 8-direction model:
| Direction | Typical Use |
|---|---|
| N | North (0°/360°) |
| NE | Northeast (45°) |
| E | East (90°) |
| SE | Southeast (135°) |
| S | South (180°) |
| SW | Southwest (225°) |
| W | West (270°) |
| NW | Northwest (315°) |
Each direction contains values for multiple wind speed bins (e.g., 0-2 m/s, 2-4 m/s, etc.).
