Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

What is a windrose diagram?

A windrose diagram is a graphical tool that displays the distribution of wind speed and direction at a location. It uses a radial plot to show how frequently winds blow from different directions and at different speeds.

How do I get rid of the watermark?

By purchasing a premium pass. A premium pass removes the watermark, enables unlimited downloads, and allows downloading the plot as an SVG file.

Purchasing a pass helps keep this place running and supports development.

Unauthorized removal of the watermark may result in a lifetime ban.

What does making an account do?

Making an account is required for purchasing a premium pass.

Is my data saved?

Yes, your data is automatically saved in your browser's local storage. It will persist across sessions unless you clear your browser data.

Data Input

What data format should I use?

WindRosePlot uses cardinal directions (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW) and customizable speed bins. You can enter data directly in the table or upload a CSV file with a direction column and speed bin columns.

How do I upload a CSV file?

Click the upload button in the table toolbar, or drag and drop a CSV file onto the table. Your CSV should have a direction column (N, NE, E, etc.) and one column per wind speed bin (e.g. 0-5, 5-10, 10-15).

See “Uploading data” in the documentation on how to correctly format your file.

Can I customize the bins?

Yes. Click Configure Bins in the table toolbar. You can create uniform bins (e.g. 0–5, 5–10, 10–15) or custom bins with specific ranges, up to 9 speed bins.

Can I undo and redo my changes?

Yes. Use Cmd/Ctrl+Z to undo and Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+Z (or Cmd/Ctrl+Y) to redo. The Undo/Redo buttons in the table toolbar do the same.

Downloads

How many downloads do I get for free?

Free users get 2 PNG downloads with watermark per week. The limit resets every 7 days. Premium pass holders get unlimited PNG and SVG downloads without watermark .

What download formats are available?

PNG (raster) and SVG (vector). PNG is available to all users with a free weekly limit. SVG downloads require a premium pass.

What's the difference between PNG and SVG?

PNG is a raster format best for the web and presentations.

SVG is a vector format that can be scaled without losing quality and is ideal for publication and further editing in vector graphics software like Inkscape, Illustrator, or Figma.

Premium

What do I get with a premium pass?
  • Unlimited downloads
  • Watermark-free plots
  • SVG export
How does the pass system work?

Time-based passes (day, week, month, or year) instead of recurring subscriptions. You pay once for your chosen duration and the pass expires automatically when the period ends. It does not auto-renew, so there is nothing to cancel. You will not be stuck with an unwanted subscription.

Technical

Is my data secure?

All data processing happens in your browser. Your data is neversent to any servers, not even when generating downloads. The plot is rendered locally and the image file is created in your browser.
